The Importance of Time Management

Why is time management useful? The answer is simple; it allows us the opportunity to efficiently achieve our goals in all areas of  life! According to Wikipedia, “Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over an amount of time to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity.”


 Useful techniques for developing time management skills.

1.) Create a daily, weekly and monthly schedule.

2.) Set goals with a time line using a due date.

3.) Prioritize your goals.

4.) Design activities to achieve goals.

5.) Be flexible – unforeseen circumstances will arise and you will need to reassess your priorities.

6.) Schedule down-time for personal goals, not just school/ work related.

7.) If you get stuck, move on to another goal and revisit the previous one later

8.) Use your resources: Research, study and ask for help.

9.) Assess the outcome.

10.) Develop a new plan to improve your process.

According to Student Academic Services, an example of an effective Weekly Schedule looks like this:

  • ” Write down your class schedule, including labs, and your work hours if any.
  • Every day of the week, show when you sleep and wake up.
  • Allow an hour for lunch and two hours for dinner. These are times you can use to relax.
  • List clubs, meetings, activities that you attend – including weekends.
  • Plan to exercise three or four times a week.
  • Allow for free-time on Friday or Saturday nights. Show any TV or game time.
  • Schedule time for naps if you tire readily. (Thomas Edison used naps most effectively!)

The remaining time could be study time. Use a hi-lighter to mark blocks of time you can commit to study. Now, count those hours. If they fit the 2:1 ratio, your Weekly Schedule is probably on track. If it’s low, add more study time. Follow the schedule for a week, and revise it as needed. Make the schedule fit your needs.”

3:30 – 5:30 //  Peet’s Coffee  //  Meet Tom for coffee.

5:30 – 6:30 // Home //  Dinner and cleanup

6:30 – 10:30  //Library – 3rd floor // History – read chapters 5 – 6

Survey chapters, read summaries (1 hour)

Underline by section, review underlining. (1 hour)

Study grammar (1/2  hour)

Make flash cards (1/2 hour)

Write out exercises (1 hour)

10:30 // Home


In conclusion,  time management is the key to growth and success. When you design a plan and time-line for your day, you are creating a course of action to achieve your objectives! As Paul J. Meyer once said, “Construct your determination with Sustained Effort, Controlled Attention, and Concentrated Energy. Opportunities never come to those who wait… they are captured by those who dare to attack.”
