How to Spot a Successful Student

What does a successful student look like? What are their habits and practices? Let’s identify a few notable qualities that you can cultivate in your own child!

1. Successful students care about being in school and engaged in class.

They miss class only in the event of an emergency, and know how to contact a few reliable classmates should they need to be absent. All readings are done prior to class. They bring all their materials everyday. They arrive to class early, sit upright, are actively thinking during class, participating in discussions, and asking questions. They are attentive throughout class and avoid distractions.

2. Successful students take thorough notes, check them soon after class to see if they have any questions, and compare their notes to the textbook so they can add in details.

They turn in all assignments typed and on time, and take advantage of any extra credit opportunities offered. They keep a planner and a schedule to keep up with readings.  They actively read by thinking, asking questions, and analyzing the material. They work hard to increase concentration and decrease procrastination. They take advantage of available resources, such as they school library.

3. Successful students set long-term goals so they know what they are working towards.

They begin assignments soon after they’re assigned and allow time for writing assignments to be revised. They devise a study plan and find a study partner or group so they are just memorizing or cramming. They set study goals and work where there are no distractions.

4. Successful students take care of their physical, mental and emotional health.

They get involved with at least one club or activity at school, and are sure to balance their leisure activities with the demands of school. They get enough sleep, eat healthy, and avoid smoking, drinking, and drugs. They know part of being successful is asking for help when they need it, and they enjoy learning.

There is much more to being successful than simply attending class and trying to get good grades.By working hard, anyone can become a successful student. Encourage your child to be on time to class, pay attention, and be responsible for their own learning. Students should let their teacher know they care about their grades by completing extra and optional work. Keep communication open with the teacher, and he or she can help guide your student to success!
